Since Drones are becoming better and better they have become a really useful piece of equipment that we can use in our studies. We have used them to flyover Penguin colonies so that we can count the number of birds nesting their without disturbing them. The British Antarctic Survey have just bought a large fixed wing drone (UAV) that can fly hundreds of miles on a trip. We are going to use this to count seals that breed on the frozen sea ice. This is a lot cheaper and safer than flying a normal plane to do this. It means we can survey animals over huge areas and more often.
