Good question. I am archaeologist but I have worked much more in a laboratory than digging archaeological sites in the big wide world. I did join an amazing excavation in Latvia a few years ago. The site was a deposit of fish bones and shells – the remains of thousands of meals prepared by hunter-gatherers about 5000 years ago. In these deposits, I recovered a human jawbone complete with teeth. It was quite an important find for a number of reasons but it also made me think a lot about the people who lived there and died there too.
