It can be, for example I am currently have a lot of fun doing this I’m A Scientist Challenge. Whilst there are lots of dull and boring bits to my Job, there are enough times I am really excited about what I am doing to make it all worthwhile. I have traveled to amazing places, Antarctica, Canada, USA, Chile, Uruguay, Russia etc. I have seen amazing animals up close. But even sitting in my office I can get excited by my work, things like seeing for the first time where animals go when they are at sea or hearing whale song from an instrument that I set up and put in the ocean. I love the discovery!
Yes! I really enjoy my job. There is lots of variation in my job which means I don’t get bored – I speak to lots of different people and work across lots of projects at once so it’s always busy too. I’m also lucky because I get to travel as part of my job, to conferences and meetings around the world that mean I can meet up with other people doing work that’s related to mine. I also do a lot of public engagement work and talking to people – like with the I’m A Scientist chats. I find that really fun too.
All jobs have good days and bad days. However, science is a career where you can embrace life long learning and face varied tasks, not simply working carrying out routine work. In business speak, doing ‘projects’ not ‘programmes’
I agree Nathan, work can definitely have it ups and downs. However I must say I do get a great sense of satisfaction when I finally figure out how to solve a problem and deliver a solution to the client! I definitely enjoy what I call my “fun” days out of the office when I get to go off and do careers events through my volunteering or attending a training session/ conference or travelling abroad to meet with a client in person.
