I’m a methodologist so I’m trying to improve the way that we do experiments – specifically I look at clinical trials, so hopefully one day I’ll be able to invent a new way to communicate to patients and trial staff to ensure that everyone is clear about what’s going to happen throughout the trial. So far I haven’t invented anything, but it’d be pretty cool to be able to invent something myself so hopefully in the future!

I personally don’t invent anything. I work on analysing data from clinical trials for new medicines that have been “invented” or created by other scientists in pharmceutical companies that own the medicines.

I have not actually invented anything directly but I am involved in the improvement of equipment that I use. As I can not follow the seals and penguins when they go to sea I need to use miniature electronic devices to record the animals’ movements and diving behaviour etc. We the development of mobile phones this technology is always improving. I have tested a number of the tags that people have built and helped them make them work better as things are very different between a lab and the wilds of Antarctica. In fact I have a student at the moment who is building a small device that can be attached to animals so that we can hear what they hear when they are underwater. This will help us understand if they use their hearing to try and find food.
