There are lots of different theories as to what happens after death, but biologically the process of death means that biological functions like breathing or being conscious stop completely.
There are two different types of death – death of the body as a whole, and then death of the tissues within the body. So first the body dies, but after that the tissues within the body die over quite a long period of time.

One of lifes biggest unanswered questions… I found this article to be quite a nice summary: http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zs4k39q

I personally like to believe in some form of the after-life and that our loved ones still watch over us after they pass away.

Well people have pondered this ever since we could think.
The very simple answer is we don’t know if there is some kind of afterlife although you can understand people hoping there is.

there is a great video here!

I loved this experiment where “out of body experiences” were tested by putting pictures on high places in hospitals that could only be seen from above. So that if someone did float above their body in a near death experience then they could describe what they saw.
